The Route of the Monasteries of León runs through the municipality of Gradefes (along the banks of the Esla River), where we will explore some of the most remarkable monastic complexes in northern Spain. Within their walls, we can trace the history of medieval Christianity, the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago, and the birth of Leonese identity.
On this guided tour, we will see the centers of religious, cultural, and economic power that for centuries have preserved an exceptional heritage of Mozarabic, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, declared Sites of Cultural Interest.
A journey through the history, art, and spirituality of the province.
We will begin our visit at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in the town of Villarmún, a building in the transitional style between Mozarabic and Romanesque. A short distance away, we will visit the ruins of the Monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza in the town of Santa Olaya de Eslonza, founded in the 10th century by the Leonese monarchy. We will continue to the Monastery of San Miguel de Escalada, considered the great jewel of the Mozarabic (or repopulation) art in Spain, founded by monks from Córdoba during the reign of Alfonso III at the end of the 9th century. Finally, we will conclude our tour at the Monastery of Santa Maria de Gradefes, built in 1168 by order of Doña Petri, the wife of a Leonese nobleman.
The guided tour is a walking tour of the interiors described. However, transportation is required to travel between locations, as the total route is approximately 15 km. Entrance fees to the monuments are not included and must be paid for on the day at the ticket offices.
